Remove Camera Serial Number from EXIF Data

Cameras write a unique body serial number — and often a lens serial — into every photo. That identifier can link otherwise anonymous images back to one device, so remove it before sharing.

Only the categories you check below are stripped.

Write a fresh Make, Model and ISO block into every cleaned image.

How It Works

  1. 1

Drop a photo; the EXIF parser decodes the maker-note and IFD tags that hold serial numbers.

  2. 2

The inspector lists BodySerialNumber, LensSerialNumber and InternalSerialNumber when present.

  3. 3

Device metadata is pre-selected so the serial tags are removed while timestamps and GPS are left alone.

  4. 4

Clean and download a copy with no serial number left in the EXIF block.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a camera serial number a privacy risk?

A serial number is unique to one physical camera. If it appears in several photos, anyone can link those images to the same device and, in some cases, to the owner who registered it.

Is the serial number always in the EXIF block?

Most interchangeable-lens cameras write it there, sometimes in the standard IFD and sometimes inside the vendor MakerNote. This tool checks both.

Does removing the serial change the photo?

No. Only the metadata tags are rewritten; the compressed image data is copied verbatim.
